It’s April already….No Fooling! As we quickly approach the final months of the school year, one key priority is to reflect on what has been achieved and how much our students and our staff have grown. With this being said, April’s blog focuses on teamwork and how to collaborate efficiently and with calibrated purpose to foster a culture of growth.

In the Greater Good Magazine article “Three Ways Administrator's Can Foster Teacher's Growth,” it discusses three ways administrator’s can cultivate positive relationships with faculty to ensure growth.

Admit your own mistakes

It is impossible to learn from someone who does not have an open mind and a growth mindset. Admitting your mistakes allows faculty to know it’s okay to have occasional mishaps. Though we may be inclined to save face in the event of a failure, owning up to our faults promotes growth and open communication, especially when working in a team. Providing faculty with a supportive environment to grow and learn from failure is the key to a positive and collaborative work environment.

Be open to receiving feedback

Open communication between administrators and staff ensures the development of a happy and healthy culture. Having an objective view of our own performance can be difficult, making a reciprocal feedback loop between administrators and staff of utmost importance. Receiving constructive criticism helps administrators and staff become better at their job while building trust between coworkers. With this, educators learn how best to leverage their assets and the strengths of those around them to create a more cohesive team.

Validate teacher uncertainty

Just as it remains important to admit your mistakes, you must also acknowledge your uncertainty. As an educator, there are times when the answer seems impossible to find. Admitting when you are uncertain promotes an open dialogue between staff members and shows that it is okay to not have all of the answers. Validating one another’s uncertainty provides staff the opportunity to collectively find a solution while creating a safe space to learn.

Overall, developing a positive culture that values open communication increases job satisfaction by making employees feel valued and understood. The implementation of these three tips can leave a positive impact on any workspace.
