Every human is wired to problem solve and if there isn’t a problem to solve, we more often than not create one. Problem solving and decision making are part of everyone's day-to-day workplace activities. Today marks the end of 2021, and this year has once again brought us a plethora of changes and challenges, but with that comes endless opportunities for new ways of innovating. An article titled “Seven Steps for Effective Problem Solving in the Workplace,” shares important elements related to the best approach for tackling a problem. In this month’s blog we will be diving into how to address problems without becoming overwhelmed. Today is the last day to conquer your goals of 2021 and prepare to conquer 2022 with new strategies in your toolbox. Dig into the article in full here and read on below for our summary of the tips and tricks shared in this article.

  1. Identify the issues. Keep in mind everyone is different and that they might have different views. Also be clear about what the problem is, but also separate the list of issues from interests.

  2. Understand everyone’s interests. This step is often missing. Keep in mind that there doesn’t have to be only one solution, and sometimes the best solution interests everyone.

  3. List the possible solutions. This is where brainstorming happens. There are endless possibilities in the room related to creativity, so don't forget to engage everyone in bringing solutions to the table.

  4. Evaluate the options. Make a pros and cons list! Be objective and look at the issue from all perspectives before deciding on a solution.

  5. Select an option or options. What is the best for both parties? Balance. This ensures that all possibilities are bundled together for a satisfying solution that meets both parties’ needs to the extent possible.

  6. Document the agreement(s). It is not ideal to rely on your memory; instead write things down as this can help with capturing all of the details and implications.

  7. Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation. Anything can happen, so make a contingency plan for the foreseeable future circumstances. Create opportunities to evaluate agreements and implementation of the plan.
