Clear Inbox, Clear Mind

As the end of the fall semester is quickly approaching and deadlines start piling up, we can find our email inbox flooded. From urgent emails, to spam, to old emails, that red notification bubble can quickly go from zero to a much larger number in the blink of an eye. Having a messy inbox can make us feel disorganized and more stressed out.

An article by SaneBoxshares that our mind and body are controlled by stimulants. Whenever you open your email and see a vast amount of new emails it causes you to feel overwhelmed and stressed, because your brain is overstimulated by how much information it trying to absorb at once. A London-based studyhas shown that having a “relentless influx of emails” can negatively impact your brain more than losing a night of sleep.

Having a system for organizing your email is a great way to clear your mind from the clutter of a messy inbox. Some tips to do this include: flagging emails you’ll get back to, starring important emails, leaving the ones that don’t matter unread, and deleting spam and other emails every Sunday.

If you allow your emails to build up and constantly notify you when you get a new one, it can seriously impact your overall mental health. Remember to take some time away from your smartphone and email notifications, especially during the weekends and on your time off. Before you know it you will have conquered your inbox!
