Why School Administrators Need Professional Learning Too!

Lawyers, engineers, doctors, educators, accountants, and people in a variety of professions engage in professional learning to deepen their professional knowledge, skills, and sometimes even their disposition to carry out their roles and responsibilities. Research shows that school administrators who participate in professional learning are more likely to positively impact student achievement because they are continuously expanding and applying their knowledge and experiences to supporting students and educators in their respective districts. The Wallace Foundation, partnered with the Southern Regional Education Board to release a report in August of 2010 titled: The Three Essentials: Improving Schools Requires District Vision, District and State Support, and Principal Leadership.

The study revealed seven strategies to support overall school improvement, and one strategy was focused specifically on professional learning. The fourth strategy listed in the report was to “invest heavily in instruction related professional learning for principles, teacher-leaders and district staff” (Wallace, 2010).  The districts that made professional learning a core responsibility reported that this focus on professional learning for school leaders was the key to their success in improving student outcomes.

Another study conducted by Learning Forward, Why Professional Development Matters,  published in 2010, reports that in order for teachers and administrators to be successful and provide the best learning experience for their students they must continue learning everyday as well. In the report, Learning Forward notes that coming together as an administration to engage in professional learning through an academy or seminar is very beneficial to the school and students. They also note, that engaging in professional learning as a team enhances the outcomes related to the implementation of the professional learning objectives.

The Time ReDesigned Academy aligns with the research around the need for high quality professional learning opportunities geared specifically toward school administrators. The Academy offers a full day of professional learning focused on helping school administrators expand their knowledge and build a time management strategy toolkit to enhance their ability to:

1. Check everything off their professional “To-Do” list!

2. Reduce the reactive nature of school leadership.

3. Achieve a healthier work-life balance.

Our Founder, Dr. Jobi Lawrence, will present 4 simple steps to redesigning professional time, 3 principles of Student-Centered Leadership, as well as several time management strategies that will change the way school leaders approach overall leadership efficiency and effectiveness.

Do you know someone who:

Has difficulty finding enough time to accomplish all they need to do in a work week?

Finds themselves consistently being pulled away from planned tasks to put out "fires"?

Gets bombarded with unscheduled interruptions?

If you answered YES to any of these 3 questions, consider hosting an academy in your area to take advantage of this professional learning opportunity.
