October provides the perfect opportunity to “Fall” into healthy habits! There is something refreshing about the changing of the seasons. This time gives you a chance to reflect on your mindset and adjust your routine to be something even better. We at Time ReDesigned hope that you are looking forward to all of the coziest parts of fall. With that being said, the transition to fall can also challenge people as the sun spends less time in the sky and the temperatures start to drop. We would like to explore some ways to check in on the people around you this month and make sure they are mentally strong so they can do their best work.
In an article called “4 Ways to Support Beginning Teachers” by Abbey Duggins there are four ways to do just that! Not only beginning teachers need support, all teachers benefit from a healthy and supportive work environment, so we will be considering how to make these four tips apply to anyone in education. Read on to learn more!
Take a team approach. Rather than assigning one person- or taking on the load yourself- to be the mentor where teachers direct all of their questions, expect that everyone share in this role. Teachers need support from one another and this support doesn’t have to come at the expense of anyone’s professional development. Making sure that everyone has a team to rely on will alleviate stress in your school.
Establish an on-going support structure. A team approach is a good start to staff support, but it is only the beginning. It is important to make sure that support is ongoing. Rather than checking in when time presents itself, build in daily check-ins with your staff. This extra effort will inspire them because they will feel valued.
Collect and use feedback. Ask teachers frequently what they appreciate about the support they are receiving and how the support they are receiving could be improved. Doing so allows for reflection on performance and will help you in considering how the professional environment can be even more supportive.
Provide inspiration. Teaching can be a draining job and performance will improve if educators are inspired by their environment. Spend time celebrating all teachers in your school and see how much morale will impact the amazing work they do!
Time ReDesigned hopes that you can use these tips to spend some extra time supporting the teachers in your school this October. It can be easy to get caught up in the shuffle, get busy, and forget to check in on people around you. You might even forget to check in with yourself! Give yourself the chance to do so this month and see how much more productive, happy, and energized you and your team become. The extra effort will come back to you in amazing ways!
